With a deafening squeal, the iron gate rose. As it receded into the ceiling, the sounds of gears and pulleys died out.

“See?” said Kellach. “Now we’re on the right track. I knew there was something more down here.”

“More what?” said Thrash. “We still haven’t found any treasure.”

“I don’t think the treasure was in this chest. I think this chest leads to the treasure.” Kellach examined the orb and the markings around it carefully. “Okay, let’s see …”

Lunk continued to stare at the sphere. He seemed convinced the shiny object was food.

“I think I’ve got it,” said Kellach. “Dris, give me your lantern.”

When his brother handed him his lantern, Kellach lit it. “We don’t want to risk running into the hell hounds, and we don’t want to take the exit, so let’s focus on door number two, the crystal paths. I need for all of you to go open that door and wait right there. But be ready for anything.”

“Like what?” said Thrash. “What are you going to do?”

“See these four symbols carved around the sphere?” said Kellach. “A straight line, crossed lines, a triangle, and a square. I think they represent the three doors plus the secret door.”

“One line, two lines, three lines, four lines,” said Driskoll. “Makes sense.”

“When I turned this sphere,” Kellach continued, “a design formed inside the glass. It reminded me of a kaleidoscope. I think if I turn it some more, I’ll eventually get a design that matches the symbol for door number two, the two crossed lines. They form an X, and X always marks the spot for treasure.”

“Okay,” said Calyssa. “Suppose you get the design you want. Then what?”

“That’s what you’re all going out there to find out.”

The others exchanged uneasy glances.

“What if you set off something in here?” said Driskoll. “I’m going to stay and watch your back.”

Kellach hesitated, then nodded. The rest shuffled out to do as Kellach asked.

“Let me know when you’re ready,” he called out to the others.

The brothers waited, listening as the group got into position out on the pit ledge and opened the door to the crystal paths. At last, they heard Thrash’s call.

“Ready!”

Slowly Kellach turned the sphere, watching the pattern inside it change as he moved it. “If I can just get the right design,” he said as he worked, “… like that!” He released the sphere, eyes wide in anticipation.

Glowing black lines crossed in the middle of the sphere, and silver bolts of light flowed from them to the matching mark carved into the bottom of the chest. This time, however, no whirring and clicking noises trickled up from under the chest.

“Are you sure that’s the right design?” asked Driskoll.

Before he could answer, the startled exclamations of the others sent both boys sprinting out to the pit. Kellach grabbed the lantern, and Driskoll drew his sword as he ran.

“What’s wrong?” asked Driskoll, skidding to a stop beside the others, who were standing side by side in front of the open door. Then he noticed their expressions. They didn’t seem frightened or dismayed, as he’d thought.
